When you are on a business trip, a poor-quality hotel room can seriously affect your experience, so it is important to know your rights and responsibilities before booking a hotel. Below are some of the most common hotel-related questions and answers.
I wanted a specific room. Do I have the right to get it?
Generally, you do not have the right to a specific room unless you clearly requested it during the booking process (for example, a suite on the 5th floor in the left wing of the building or a specific room category). Therefore, if you really want a particular room, make sure to specify this when making your reservation. Always obtain written confirmation that the requested room has been booked.
If the hotel does not provide the agreed room, this may be considered a breach of the agreement, and you may be entitled to compensation for any damages caused.
This room does not meet my expectations — can I do something about it?
The hotel room you receive may differ from the clean and comfortable room shown on the hotel’s website or in its promotional materials. While some exaggeration in advertising is acceptable, intentionally misleading customers is not.
If the room you receive is significantly below the expected standard, contact the hotel manager immediately. This also applies if the room is not properly cleaned or is excessively noisy. You may request another room, a discount, or a partial refund.
Do I have the right to privacy in my hotel room?
Generally, yes. You have the right to expect privacy in your hotel room. However, if you are involved in illegal activities or disturb other guests, hotel management may enter your room without your permission.
It is important to note that hotel management, not the police, may enter a room without the guest’s consent under certain circumstances. Hotel employees cannot authorize the police to search your room without proper legal grounds.
Hotel staff also have the right to enter your room for cleaning or necessary maintenance services.
What happens if I do not check out on time?
Unlike renting an apartment or house, a hotel has the right to remove a guest who does not leave the room at the agreed checkout time. Of course, most hotels are understanding about short delays, but the hotel administration may require you to leave, deactivate your electronic key, and remove your belongings.
My belongings were stolen from my hotel room — is the hotel responsible?
Historically, hotels were responsible for guests’ belongings during their stay. Today, hotels are generally required to provide a safe for storing valuables.
If the hotel safe is faulty or does not meet safety requirements, the hotel may be responsible for losses if the property was stolen or damaged.
My car was damaged in the hotel parking lot — is the hotel responsible?
This depends on whether the hotel took reasonable precautions to protect guests’ vehicles. If the hotel was negligent, it may be held responsible for the damage.
If items were stolen from a vehicle and the parking area lacked proper security measures, the hotel may also be required to compensate for the loss, as such risks could have been predicted and prevented.
A crime occurred near the hotel — is the hotel responsible?
Generally, hotels are not responsible for crimes committed on or near their property. An exception may apply if the hotel could have foreseen the risk but failed to take appropriate safety measures.
For example, if a hotel is located in a high-crime area but does not provide basic security measures (such as secured windows, proper lighting, or surveillance cameras), it may be held responsible. Hotels should also inform guests about known safety risks in the area.
What responsibilities does a hotel have regarding pool safety?
Hotels understand that pools are an attractive feature for guests, but they also have a responsibility to ensure visitor safety.
In addition to basic safety measures, hotels should consider that children and adults under the influence of alcohol may use the pool and provide appropriate precautions.
What documents are required for hotel check-in?
To check into a hotel, guests must provide an original passport or identification document for all people staying in the room.
